Dude was 87, he only had a couple years left at most, and saw dying this way would do more to contribute to inspiring his people than anything else he’d do.
As I understand it, he knew he could be martyred pretty much at any time by not completely living underground, but chose to yolo it
he thought he was safe with scheduling meeting on that day, because he didn’t expect IAF to attack during shabbat
This makes more sense than the martyrdom others mention. His kid and grandkid were also killed in the strike. Not very inspirational.
