  • Just another flavor of cynicism for me. Before AI, I would look at most “cute” animal videos and just see an animal performing a trained trick under the guise of “Omg, LOOK my dogs love spontaneously hugging each other, isn’t that cute??!!”

People have ALWAYS lied on the internet.

  • So what?

    Seriously, so what?

Chatbots have been around for ages, way longer than the current “AI” trend. It’s always been possible to get them to say some version of “kill yourself”.

ChatGPT didn’t gaslight a guy into killing his mom. A mentally ill man killed his mom. If a fucking chatbot is the thing that triggered it, then anything could have. Same thing with the people killing themselves because a chatbot told them too. That’s just cold Darwinism. We didn’t suddenly ban Catcher in the Rye because some schizophrenic guy decided it was telling him to kill John Lennon; we recognized that there are simply crazy people in this world who could be set off by anything.

The “safeguards” you want in place are not feasible because you want them to account for people with mental illness, or people so stupid that something else would have killed them first.

You want the real story to this article? Dumbass dies from using drugs irresponsibly, parents blame anything they can except their son because they are too blinded by grief to recognize that their precious little junkie was a fucking idiot. ChatGPT did not force him to take drugs. ChatGPT did not supply him with drugs. That was all him. The only one to blame for his death is his dumbass self.

  • Too fucking stupid to recognize that people can’t predict the future. Too fucking stubborn to accept that you’re wrong when people point out what broken, dumbass logic you’re trying to use. You’re fucking cooked mate. Maybe get some sleep or grab a snack before you keep trying for the “Dumbest Comment of the Month” award.

  • People got mad at me for pointing out this is the case when people die because they listen to an AI chatbot, but it’s true. AI 100% needs more regulation, but introduce any new tool to everyone all at once, and some idiots will use it to remove themselves from the gene pool. If you sent everyone in the world a thin, 2in rod of inert iron, there would be a handful of people who would figure out a way to kill themselves with it.

  • A lot fucking less than the internet would have you believe. Take a second and examine all your evidence for believing “there are people who actually hold this opinion”. Does it all come from the internet? Almost entirely from no-context screenshots or clips that seem suspiciously scripted? Do you think maybe those aren’t the best sources?

That’s the problem every time these fake as shit posts are created. There are always folks in the comments that rush to defend it by going “well it might be fake THIS time, but it sounds like something that COULD happen, so I’m gonna still file it away as evidence that it does.”

Like, I’m sure SOME people exist like that. There are 8.3 billion people in this world, that’s enough that you can always find a handful that believe anything. There is a non-zero number of people that enjoy eating literal shit, but that doesn’t mean they are everywhere.

And before you say it (because this is always the reply), if your evidence for their existence is the results of elections or the abundance of stupid people, that is faulty logic. There is an ocean of separation between people who are simply idiots, and those that actually hold opinions like “Libraries are a waste cuz they’re full of books. Why book when internet?”

And the Lakota Sioux took it from the Cheyenne tribe by arrow point only 100 years prior to that. So yea, the Sioux had the land stolen from them by force, but they stole it by force themselves before that. And by this point, the US has controlled the land longer than the Sioux ever did.

On the other hand, the US did have a formal treaty with the Sioux that granted them the land which the US willfully broke when gold was discovered.

  • Go to bakery, give them a flash drive, ask them to make a cake with a picture of the flashdrive.

“Umm… You mean use a picture on the flashdrive?”

“No, I want you to take a picture of the flashdrive itself and put it on the cake… It’s for a joke…”

    “Ok, whatever, you’re the customer!”

Post picture of the cake you specifically requested “Omg! LoOk whAt thE BaKery diD!!!1”

This is one of those things that I go against the Lemmy hivemind on. I cut out pretty much every streaming service and sail the high seas for most of my media. But I consider YouTube Premium worth the cost.

I got grandfathered into it when Google Music shut down and I really haven’t felt the need to change anything. YouTube music is better than Spotify. I don’t have to constantly play the whack-a-mole game of ad blockers that will inevitably break during a YouTube update. I don’t have to rely on finicky software to get videos to play in the background with my phone screen off.

Look, I get it. All these features used to be offered for free without ads. I think that more than anything is why people are so rabidly against premium, because they feel like they had that stuff stolen from them. But YouTube is a service, not a right. You were never guaranteed those features permanently. The cost of Premium is miniscule compared to the benefits I get from it. I use YouTube a LOT. Weather for how to videos, or ASMR, or background music, or documentaries, or podcasts. I like knowing that no matter where I use it, from my computer to my phone to the random smart TV in a hotel that I cast to, I’m not going to see any ads.

All this is based on the current services offered at the current price. If and when they start making those services shittier or increase the cost, then I will seek alternatives; but not before.

EDIT: I love all the many replies going “Yea but you could just use this program combined with this plugin on your locally hosted server. Just use these 3 different pieces of software. Have you tried Squootle? Just use Squootle and SEvR, bro. If you use Squootle you can download the video, recompress it, and play it from any desktop running Windows 7.”
