Do your part in these trying times, don’t log into discord. Better yet delete your account.
EDIT: im not saying you shouldnt go to other platforms! for example im using both lemmy and reddit lol. just that leaving discord is probably too far and not worth it for most people. but i do think trying other platforms can be very good!
firstly, the complants did work and discord is pushing back the age verification, adding spoiler channels to reduce the number of nsfw channel usage you have to verify for, making sure to only partner with verification systems that do it entirely on-device, writing more about their partners for clarity, and adding credit card verification. (also just to be clear if ur not using nsfw stuff u dont need to even verify at all)
secondly, discord is too big to fail, this is not the older times of the internet where platforms can just die like that. there are millions of established people and communities that are not moving anywhere any time soon. there aren’t any perfect alternatives and moving people over sucks regardless of alternatives, combined with moving information over, which, sadly, is stored on discord a LOT. so discord isn’t going anywhere. canceling nitro is very fair, but going away from discord is mostly just an inconvenience for yourself, especially when we see that backlash works.
im not saying discord is good, im just saying i don’t think it does anything to quit it when the people that are quitting are a (vocal?) minority and it’s not as effective as complaining directly or just canceling nitro
discord is pushing back the age verification
Discord is not being forced to add identity verification.
and they’re not trying to add identity verification. they’re specifically trying to develop something that separates age verification from identity verification. for example they stopped working with persona
Well seeing as im blocked from loggin in without Verifikation, atleast part of your text is wrong.
Even a minority moving to more open platforms will make a huge difference because it will create enough network effects for those to be decent options, like happened with Lemmy. This is important because the enshittification of Discord is obviously only getting started, they aren’t even a corporation yet, should be clear by now how this goes and why complaining isn’t going to ultimately change their course.
People these days aren’t tied to discord to talk to their friends. People are tied to Discord because of projects who’s shameful creators are discord bros and that’s the only way to get support on their projects. Ignoring the current problem with Discord at hand, this is an awful way to get support because Discord is not searchable and the nature of chats means everything is very… linear.
I do think there’s more responsibility here on people who are doing free work contributing to adding value to the platform
They’ve added forum-like features so it’s not as bad as in the past anymore. But it’s still super annoying to use and I’d rather have support for stuff anywhere else… Except other instant messaging services.
Most people and most servers don’t use those features and even if they did they aren’t actual web forums, they’re a collection of chat rooms arranged like a forum in a server which can’t be seen without membership. Unlike forums which are in most cases publicly viewable.
I’m aware, there’s a few projects that I need to use, and currently unwilling to look for alternatives for, that sadly have their support on discord only.
But they at least use the features so digging for stuff is somewhat more possible, I still don’t get how anyone sane thinks it’s a good idea, maybe discord seemed like leds work? Idk…
yeah, im not saying you shouldn’t go to other platforms! i just think entirely deleting discord at this current point is probably unnecessary and not helpful enough for most people. doesnt mean you shouldnt also try other ones tho!
One can use discord and other systems in the intermission period just saying
yes! that’s very fair
