Boomer meme. AI haters are not Luddites. If you can use tools to create higher-quality things without exploitation, go ahead. Especially inherently non-copyrightable things with utilitarian function. And 3D printers don’t inherently make anything that imitates creativity or ideas, only creating physical objects based on slicer instructions, which is why the AI backlash didn’t start 15 years ago to target them.
what
is the message here that ai makes clean and sharp things or what
I think the message that this is trying to boil down to is “Something made by AI is not always inherently worse than something made by a human.” Because a human is technically capable of making a sloppy piece with a 3D pen while a machine is technically capable of making a precise piece.
But I would argue that a 3D printer does not involve any artificial intelligence. A person created the original 3D model, and then an algorithm is instructing the printer how to reproduce that model. But an algorithm is not intelligence.
Slop ≠ sloppy, and the opposite of slop is not precise.
Unfortunately, its beginning to be a little more complicated than that, as there are prints that can be generated by AI now. Also, some software that detects print issues is probably using AI based tangle detection (pretty it actually is more AI based than just ML, but if anyone knows better let me know). The irony is that this is becoming a pretty good shit post due to that new difference.
More like machines bad, humans good. But that doesn’t really apply well to 3D printing. Those pens are horrendous. Might also just be that I’m really crappy to draw things in general tho
It’s a shit post
This bothers me because IMO it fundamentally misunderstands why people hate machine learning. Machine learning isn’t inherently bad. It’s what people do with it that’s bad, because image generators have scraped billions of images without the users or creators consent and regurgitate them according to probability. Now they have improved somewhat. The soup look is gone, instead exchanged with some weird plastic look. The result of an image generation will always be the lowest common denominator, even if it may look high quality. It isn’t. It is just an average of the specific word group you have chosen. And with that, it boils down to high quality cliches. So, just like Disney Marvel, you can pump out high quality looking slop and cliches at an unprecedented rate. And all happened by exploiting literally anyone who has ever created any image. What did people get? Not a single cent.
I’m gonna be honest, even if people were paid for their contributions to midjourney’s… brain, I guess, I would still hate it.
AI is a product of the same sickness, the same mental illness that society has been suffering from for, like, centuries. It is a technology built by and for people who’d want a private car so they won’t have to sit on the bus among the dirty poors. It’s inhuman.
this is like someone making a digital 2D artwork, and someone printing it out, and then drawing their own and saying “LOOK, THE COMPUTER DID IT BETTER SO CLEARLY THE COMPITER MADE ART!”
completely ignoring the original artist.
The word “slop” is mutating so fast I’m having serious trouble keeping up with what it means from day to day. I saw a movie referred to as “quality slop” to mean something like “oscar bait” and I’ve fully given up on trying to make sense of it.
That may have been a joke.
But if somebody did mean it seriously, like they were actually upset, one, I would make fun of them, and two, I would think that what they think they’re gesturing at is a kind of insincerity, or inauthenticness, by calling the “quality” film factory-made.
How does that make sense… It’s sort of like how conservatives think that woke lefties only pretend to care about civil rights as a rhetorical tactic to use against them.
If you’re not getting it, you’re simply not slopping hard enough. Slop is streets ahead in terms of terms.
another hand touches the beacon
HEAR ME AND OBEY
I didn’t realise 3D printers were completely sentient and design things themselves now.
We are probably just a few years off from that. Even now, you can probably describe a simple shape to a chatbot and have it spit out OpenSCAD code that generates a 3D model for that shape.
Is that the definition of slop?
Wouldn’t that make an ant hill slop?
Now we are going down the rabbit hole… art ants actually robots?
Don’t ask my why, but I seriously do not recommend creating a DIY condom with that pencil
I don’t want your non Platonic solids.
Perfection.
