You would think the crippling cost of a child would be the reason, but to each their own I guess.
My dad doesn’t say it but he wanted the family line to continue. I don’t care, humans will continue without this mix of DNA.
He never needs to know I got a vasectomy back in my 30s.
i’m in a field filled with big ego/low emotional intelligence people and it’d wild to me how obsessed with “legacy” so many of them are.
no one even knows about you, why would they care about your family line? the most history will remember 99.999% of us is some obituary in a newspaper noone reads. the only way you really impact those odds is by being a creative or making in impact in your community/ie. joining political stage
all caught up in the rat race wasting their lifes chasing a fulfillment/acknowledgement they’ll never recieve from the boss/org while burning what little potential for human connection they actually have by overworking so much.
i’m in a field filled with big ego/low emotional intelligence people
That doesn’t narrow it down, unfortunately.
I’m guessing it’s a paddock somewhere in 'Murica
I think it’s instinctive. It’s why blood and soil propaganda works.
My dad: “if you don’t have kids, the family name and lineage dies with you.”
Me:

So anyhow my wife, kids, and me all have different last names. Complicated hippie stuff yada yada.
At first, my dad was all disappointed the family name ends with me.
Fast forward fifteen years. My dad discovers that our family changed their names when they moved to the “old” (middle?) country 100+ years ago, to assimilate there. They just didn’t anglicize the name when we moved here.
TL;DR: all names are just made up
If you start tracing family’s back far enough you find that most “lineages” get murky pretty fast.
Anyone walking around doing spermatogenesis without a vasectomy is a fucking idiot.
You can do it while you walk??
I don’t really even think about it anymore.
It’s not really comparable, my mom didn’t buy a PlayStation because she couldn’t afford it.
Now I don’t have a kid because it’s expensive and I can’t afford it … But it’s totally different
Well my mum didn’t buy me a ps2 because she knew I wouldn’t have kids. It was prevenge
Yeah, well, my mom didn’t buy a PlayStation because she couldn’t afford it. She also couldn’t afford me. Or my older sister.
I’m not saying you should have kids. That’s a decision you don’t take lightly.
But as a father of 2, I want to tell you that you will never love anybody or anything in the world than you will with your kids. I was a selfish piece of shit and after having kids, man, I hate who I was before.
It’s not for the faint of hearts. Shit ain’t easy. But I can tell you it’s quite the experience and I don’t regret it.
I’m a selfish piece of shit and that’s why I don’t want and will never have kids. I like my freedom. I like my partner and I tossing the dogs into the car and just going out somewhere. I like coming home from work and just having a quiet evening with no responsibilities. I like only having to buy groceries for two people.
I don’t even think this is selfish. It’s only selfish to put yourself first when you have kids who depend on you. People choose the responsibilities they take on in life, and you don’t owe the world anything here. If you don’t have kids, you’re able to do more for yourself, and anyone who calls you selfish for it may actually be a bit jealous, in which case they should reassess their own parental priorities.
Kinda hope people are not making big life changing decisions like this based on what their parents did or did not buy them as a child.
And parents should not be pressuring their kids to have kids they don’t want.
There’s a kind of a streak of maybe well intentioned but pretty relentless humourlessness on Lemmy. Apologies for being argumentative, but did you think this 2 panel comic strip was representative of an actual scenario someone’s experiencing? Do you think they really are as you say, making big life decisions based on what their parents did or did not but them as a child? Or do you not think maybe the decision to depict this scenario in this format might indicate it’s more likely a joke?
Most humour has some truth to it no? Otherwise it’s not normally funny.
I can see from comments outside of mine that it’s struck a cord with some, as they have seemingly had bad relationships with their own parents.
Not sure why my comment sticks out enough to question my sense of humour, as I was just commenting that I hope people really are not making these sorts of calls based on spite. I suspect sadly that’s probably not always the case due to the complexities of people.
Although I am curious, as a joke, do you think it’s a good one?
Yes. It is funny.
Not everything on the Internet should be taken as seriously as you are. If you are upset by this two panel meme, that’s something you need to reflect upon yourself.
To put your mind at rest, I’m not losing sleep from this or in any form of distress. My comment is so mild and not directly critical of the post, that I can’t even understand why it provoked anyone else to reply. Just putting it out there the hope people wouldn’t act like this. Feel like more was read into that comment than necessary.
Kinda hope people are not making big life changing decisions like this based on what their parents did or did not buy them as a child.
I think you’re taking this meme way too seriously.
And parents should not be pressuring their kids to have kids they don’t want.
Oh honey…
No “You sweet summer child” ? 🙃
Which ever dialect works best.
👍
We call this hyperbolic dark humor. It’s meant to be irrational and to sound unhinged. That’s where the humor lies.
Good to know 👍
Plot twist : The day you have a kid, your mom buys him a PS5
But it’s all locked down and outdated.
*PS2
*steam machine
One is WAY more expensive and effort-taking.
Yeah do have any idea how much gaming as a hobby has cost me?
You can’t even legally inherit a steam account…
in some places you can.
she had to sue, but it seems precedent was set perhaps ?
china also, thought it sounds like you’d have to sue there :
In the year 2145:“Mr. GabeN, sir, uh… There’s something you should see. Somehow this account has been active ay least 14 hours a week… For over 100 years.”
GabeN in a Mr. House style life preservation system: “Shut it down.”
My mother went and got another daughter so she has access to a grandbaby cause me and twin sure aren’t ever making any. Especially now we’re almost 40.
My mom’s twin has grandbabies and now grandchildren. Non of my mom’s children have had a child yet, so she will go their family gatherings with her twin sister
Mother is an only child so I thiiink it’s her husband’s niece but I’m unsure!
My brother got a Sega Genesis, PS, PS2, N64, Dreamcast, XBox, and XBox360. I got an apple iie and a Gameboy color.
He sold his systems as soon as a new one came out. Mine mysteriously disappeared while I was away at college. I’m totally not bitter.
Anyways, neither one of us having kids.
I would never ask my adult children to make me grandchildren. Because their mother’s gene pool should not be continued.
This takes on a fairly different meaning depending on which parent you are.
Congratulations on not having a child! You deserve attention and praise, but most of it is going to go to expectant parents who are probably just going to fuck things up for everyone, for generations to come. But I see you. You rock.
I don’t need attention and praise for not having kids. New parents can have all that. I’ll gladly sleep in on weekends, come home from work and put my feet up, and enjoy my freedom as an adult.
Actually, given how ass-tastic Sony has been lately, I’d say mom made the right call without knowing so.
The PS2 was a good console, in its time. So was Sony, well they were better than now. Actually that’s selling the console short, cause most families didn’t get it because it played games, they got it to play DVDs and it was by far the first affordable DVD player in it’s time.
So was Sony, well they were better than now.
Sony was only “better” because they wanted to destroy nintendo for backstapping them.
No one should be having children. It’s an Earth problem. Not a make the potential grandparents happy problem.
Fewer women in the world than men.
